Thyroid Pathology and Hair Loss

When you suffer from thyroid pathology such as hypo- and hyperthyroidism, we have a possible triggering factor for hair loss, this disease being more common in women.

One of the important functions regarding hair is that thyroid hormones can affect hair cycles. This type of alteration depends a lot on each patient, since in some cases it can manifest abruptly and in others it does not.

In hypothyroidism there is an insufficient production of hormones from the thyroid gland (↓ T4 and ↑ Tsh) and in hyperthyroidism an excessive production (↑ T4 , ↓ Tsh), For the following we can say that the insufficient production of the thyroid causes fall of chronic and diffuse hair, since the telogen phase (rest) increases and the anagen phase (growth) is delayed, in addition the hair becomes more fragile, rough and dry.

In the case of hyperthyroidism, diffuse hair loss can also be seen due to the acceleration of hair cycles, causing the follicles to be born and die faster. Hair becomes oilier, finer, and loses volume.

From what has been described above, we can conclude that in patients suffering from these pathologies, the ideal is first to treat the hormonal problem, since it is the one that directly affects the hair through medical treatments, secondly, it can be complemented with vitamins, foods that can provide us with nutrients for hair growth
